Welcome to San Patricio School

As many people know, San Patricio School has been teaching tens of thousands of young people in Madrid since 1958. Since its inception, our educational model has taken ideas from the most innovative pedagogical trends, to develop a unique, comprehensive, and detailed educational project. To this day, we can proudly say that San Patricio is a reference for many other schools in Spain.

As part of our commitment to research ways to improve the education of our students, together with our focus on implementing management systems based on continuous improvement, it has since made a substantial contribution to our goal of continuously improving our teaching model, which should have a direct influence on the development of our students’ skills. Especially those which the Spanish curriculum does not give sufficient importance to, but are essential to our educational project, amongst which we would highlight emotional skills, multilingualism, artistic skills, and the health-related habits.

This way we can be sure of successfully achieving four key goals at the end of our students’ education

  • The first, that they acquire a solid understanding of the Spanish education system’s specific contents. In this system, History, Geography or Literature are essential, and its other contents, which are much more extensive than in other systems, require a high level of performance from students so they can study at their chosen universities, both in Spain and abroad.
  • The second, that at the end of their schooling, they have attained a spoken and written command of the English language and solid knowledge of another foreign language (German or French). That they have chosen with full knowledge, due to their permanent contact with both from their pre-school stage.
  • The third, that they developed other more specific skills such as art, knowing how to work in a team, an efficient and responsible use of communication technologies, knowing how to express themselves adequately in public or how to enjoy regular physical activity or sports.
  • Finally, and most importantly, based on the values of the Gospel, they develop as individuals who are responsible for themselves, with whom they live and with the society they come to live in. That their personal relations skills, based on values such as loyalty, sincerity or respect, allows them to create an environment of friendships that will contribute to their happiness.

I am convinced that what our students become in the future depend to a very large extent on how they act. That is why it seems even more important to prioritise in them regarding how instead of what. For this important purpose, close collaboration and trust among the people entrusted with the responsibility for their education – their parents and their teachers (the family and the school) – is essential. Our students’ families have trusted us and we trust them. Putting this mutual trust into practice, maintaining a constant and sincere communication, is one of the keys to San Patricio’s success. And for me, being at the forefront of this extraordinary institution is a priority.

The commitment to “Educate”, a constant motivation throughout the history of San Patricio School, is based on 7 fundamental values. These values, and the principles they encompass, are the constant benchmarks for our entire organisation and management system.

Christian Humanism

is, by conviction of its founders and followers, the best way for an individual to obtain a comprehensive education. Far from any kind of fundamentalism, the institution is based on the “Manual of Values” found in the Gospel message.

Commitment

to the families and students, made evident in the seriousness and rigour of everything we do. The motto; “What is good for the students is good for the School”, clearly reflects the value of commitment. The institution is, therefore, “committed to education”.

Generosity

as an expression of service and assistance to others, mainly through the creation and development of the San Patricio Foundation.

Constance

developed through instilling daily work habits and summed up very well in this phrase, frequently repeated by our teachers: “nothing worthwhile in life is achieved without effort”.

Trust

that the families place in San Patricio School to educate their children. As well as driving us to continue with our mission, the trust placed in us has great value in terms of the motivation it gives us, and the image of the Institution that it projects.

Origin & History

San Patricio was first opened in 1958, on 200 Serrano Street in Madrid, as an officially recognised Teaching Centre, under the Education Act of 1953, amended in 1957.

Its founders were four dynamic and enterprising people who, with courage and a vision for the future, were ahead of their time: Ms Luisa Murias, Ms Luz Murias, Mr Jaime Marugán and Mr Gabriel Castellano. They had marked personalities that were as different as they were complementary. They made up the first Governing Board of San Patricio, and left a clear impression on the School from the beginning; an enduring example and spirit.

An open school, with an avant-garde spirit and Anglo-Saxon approach, it was created based on three guidelines: being a Catholic school, working with a small number of students per classroom, and offering English language classes from an early age. The combination of the first and last of these three characteristics is the fundamental reason for the Irish connotation in the school’s name.

The idea of carrying out mixed teaching based on Christian values, with a clear customised approach and focus on immersion in the English language and culture, attracted so much attention that San Patricio quickly grew and established itself. But it was not solely due to the very innovative and atypical approach for that time; it was also thanks to the good work of the Technical Management and a very well-chosen teaching staff, as well as the generalised satisfaction of our first families who, firmly believing in the project, “entrusted their children to San Patricio”.
